Tennis team still banks on seniors

The CWG needs the experienced players to win medals, says head coach
Joe Williams
A full-strength Indian tennis team will play the Commonwealth Games, said Jaideep Mukherjea, head coach and the chairman of tennis for the Games.
"They will all be there, including Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza," said Mukherjee, who is here to look at the camp, which is underway at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi.
In all, there will be 12 players for the Games, which include singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories. "Leander and Mahesh will play the doubles for sure, while Sania will pair up with Mahesh for the mixed doubles," said Mukherjee.
With Isha Lakhani and Ankit Bhambri taking a break for tennis for personal reasons, Nirupama Sanjeev has been shortlisted. "She is one of the senior members of the team and has done well in the ITF here, so we have considered her for the camp," said Mukherjea.
"Leander and Mahesh are playing at the international circuit and they are doing well, so why take a chance with youngsters, who are still in the learning process? In years to come, we will see some new faces."
He added, "Poojashree Venkatesh should find her name in the women's team, but it all depends on how she does in the camp. But with this camp we will have a strong bench."
