Advani keeps medal hope alive in Indoor Asian Games
Hanoi (Vietnam):Reigning world champion Pankaj Advani kept India's hopes alive in the third Indoor Asian Games after advancing to the quarterfinals of the 15-Red Snooker discipline.
Advani, who on Monday, crashed out in the pre-quarterfinals of the 6-Red Snooker discipline, showed immense maturity and depth in his technique and won both his encounters of the day in the 15-Red Snooker.
Another Indian Delhi Boy Manan Chandra, who agonisingly came close to a medal in the 6-Red Snooker discipline and ultimately finished fourth, started his campaign in 15-Red Snooker discipline on a rollicking note and defeated Bruneis Ahmed Ghulam Hasan Muanedi.
In the men singles of 1-Cushion Carom, Indias Vijay Goel failed to provide any challenge to his opponent Japans Tadashi Machida and lost 35-100. PTI
Prakash wins in Korea
New Delhi: Prakash Amritraj stunned fifth seed and local favourite Kyu Tae IM to advance to the singles second round of the ATP Challenger event in Chuncheon, Korea but his campaign in the doubles was cut short in the opening round itself.
Unseeded in the singles, Prakash shocked his fifth seed opponent 7-6(2) 6-2 in the opening round of the $1,00,000 hard court event.
He will next play Latvian Andis Juska, who sent packing Korean wild card Sang-Woo Noh 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.
However, a disappointing result was in store for Prakash in the doubles as he and his American partner Alex Kuznetosv suffered a 3-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of second seeded South African-Dane pair of Rik de Voest and Frederik Nielsen in the first round.
Meanwhile, fourth seed Purav Raja and Sadik Kadir of Australia stormed into the doubles quarter-finals after scoring a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Slovakian pair of Kamil Capkovic and Pavol Cervenak. PTI
Sanam Singh enters main draw
New Delhi: Sanam Singh returned to the professional circuit in style, toppling eight seed Kaden Hensel in a tough three setter to qualify for the main draw of the ATP Challenger event in Charlottesville, US.
The two time champion of the US Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Championships, Sanam got the better of his Australian opponent 6-2 1-6 7-5 in the third and final qualifying round of the US 50,000 event. Before beating Kaden, the Indian had shocked third seed Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in the first round.
Sanam will take on sixth seed Grega Zemlja of Slovakia in the first round of the main draw, which also has Indias numero uno singles player Somdev Devvarman. PTI
Indian under 19 team leaves for Iraq
Dubai: The Indian Under-19 football national team left for Iraq to participate in the AFC Under-19 Championship Qualifiers.
The team under Head Coach Colin Toal had been training in Dubai ahead of the qualifiers.
The team play their first game on 5 November against hosts Iraq followed by Saudi Arabia on 7 November, Oman on 10 November, Afghanistan on 12 November and they finally play Kuwait on 15 November.
