Magic moments: How the Kiwis played their innings

watson_winsThe toss for the grand finale has been won by the Kiwis and they have decided to bat first. On losing the toss Ricky said, "I would have batted too. The team is very excited... anything around 250-260 is gettable.

In the absence of injured Vettori, McCullum will lead the New Zealand. J S Patel will fill in the vacancy of Vettori for the grand finale of the Champions Trophy 2009.

New Zealand last won the Champions Trophy in 2000; and after nine long years they have the opportunity to reclaim the throne of being the best.

The match between the two teams - New Zealand and Australia was all the more important as these two share a very dubious distinction to be part of the most disgraceful moment in the cricketing history.

Match progress:

Aus innings: Current Score 187 for the loss of four wickets in 44 overs.

New Zealand Innings:
Brett Lee opened the attack with the new ball. For the Kiwis, the acting captain McCullum took first strike, on the runners end is Aaron Redmond. Both the player sfail to open their account after the first over. Three extras add up to the scoreboard.

McCullum looses his cool
After struggling to keep the score board ticking McCullum lost his cool and edged a delivery of Siddle to the keeper in an attempt to score. Guptill comes in place of McCullum.

However, Redmond was struggling with the deliveries from Siddle. The Australian bowlers were doing their bit to restrict the batsmen from settling down.

Siddle, however, didn't seem to be prepared for an assault. He continued to bowl consistantly leaving no room for the batsmen to play big shots. Kiwis struggle to get boundaries.

KD Mills: Another run out
Mills steadily moved to double figures before being sent back by Punter's miraculous fielding.

Aus takes bowling powerplay
Soon after the Aussies took the bowling powerplay, the things started to get better for the Kiwis. Johnson faltered in length by overpitching a delivery outside the off stump, Guptill hammered it to the boundary. After 15 overs the Kiwis just managed to score 50 runs. Though the score wasn't very impressive but the most important thing for the Kiwis at that moment was to create a partnership.

The end of powerplay scheduled the comeback of the Aussies into the game.

Redmond Stumped
Redmonds aggression couldn't last long. The partnership between him and Guptill had inched to 61 runs when the batsman was tempted to come down the track. Hauritz  reacted quickly and bowled the bowl slightly wide. Missing the ball, trying to reach it, Paine made no mistake and clipped off the bails.

Guptill and Taylor - double shock
Guptill after playing an impressive knock of 40 runs, returned an easy catch to Hauritz. He was the more settled of the two batsmen and certainly, everyone was banking on him to take the game till the end. However, the shock of loosing Guptill hadn't faded away when Talylor was sent off to the pavillion with an excellent catch by Hussey.

These two important wickets lost on quick sessions badly crippled the Black Caps, raising the hopes of the Australian fans.

Elliot dismissed
The Kiwis had crawled their way to make 92 runs in 26 overs, when they suffered another important blow. Elliot was deceived by an inswinging yorker from Brett Lee. Trying to defend it into the off side, Elliot missed the ball, hitting his right pad, he was declared LBW out.

Franklin and Broom
The partnership between Franklin and Broom slowly inched its way to take the Black Caps to 153 at a run rate of 3.5, before the two decided to take the batting powerplay in the 39th over. However, a terrible misunderstanding broke the partnership in the 41st over. Broom was run out by a timely throw by Hussey.

Just after seven deliveries since the last wicket, Franklin too was dismissed in style with a wonderful yorker at 146 miles by Lee.

IG Butler:
Butler too was sent off after being struck on the pads. The hopes of seeing high score in the final drowned with that wicket. Now the, final remaining two wickets would just be trying to clinch the 200 runs mark. Kiwis after 45 overs were only 184 for the loss of eight wickets. New Zealand 190 for the loss of nine wickets. JS Patel and Shane Bond on the crease.

The final score after 50 overs, Australia needed 201 runs to successfuly defend their Champions Trophy title.
