Mahendra Singh Dhoni warned his players against complacency after the first ODI. Guess his words didn't register. Dhoni spoke to his players after West Indies ran the Indians close in chase of 339.
On Sunday, a mix of complacency and atrocious shot selection ensured that the Indian top-order fell without a fight. India were 82 for eight at one point but Dhoni played one of the best back-against-the-wall innings to carry India to 188.
Dhoni fell agonisingly close to a hundred. He was dismissed on 95 while trying to make room and play the ball to the point region. But the slower ball from Jerome Taylor crashed into the stumps bringing an end to the Indian skippers dogged innings.
Dhoni found the right partner in Rudra Pratap Singh. They added 101 runs for the ninth wicket, a partnership that could prove to be match-winning if India's bowlers bowl with heart. Dhoni walked into the middle in the second over after India lost early wickets.
Dhoni hit spinner Sulieman Benn for a six but played according to the demands of the predicament he found himself in. He didn't take any risks and bid his time.
Dinesh Karthik was the first to go. Jerome Taylor got the ball to move away late and Karthik, induced into playing the drive, only managed a thick edge which wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin pouched.
Three balls later, Gautam Gambhir slashed at a wide ball from Ravi Rampaul. The ball was short and wide and if things were going his way Gambhir probably would have dispatched it to the boundary.
However, Gambhir succeeded only in sending the ball to Ramdin. Much was expected from Rohit Sharma. But Rampaul induced an edge from him. Ramdin fumbled but the ball popped up to Runako Morton at second slip. Yuvraj Singh, the centurion of the first game, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni steadied the ship. Yuvraj was the more forceful of the two. They added 47 runs for the fourth wicket. Once Yuvraj fell, India went into further tailspin.
