Govt peeved at Modi for not consulting officials

New Delhi: With the Union home ministry again expressing inability to spare central forces for the IPL, the organisers are expected to submit a revised schedule.

The Press Trust of India quoted official sources as saying the IPL organisers may submit a revised schedule to the Centre on Tuesday, after which the home ministry will begin consulting the states.

The sources said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and others were trying to meet home minister P Chidambaram for two days. The talks finally took place on Monday, but the team had to be content with meeting special secretary (internal security) Raman Srivastava.

The home ministry, which expressed concern about the six-week tournament clashing with the general election, has rejected two proposed schedules submitted by the IPL. The league is scheduled to run from April 10 to May 24 while general elections will take place from April 16 to May 13.

The ministry was peeved after Modi announced the schedule without consulting the Centre. It saw it as a pressure tactic. Political circles linked the IPL-home ministry standoff to the UPA's internalpolitics.
IPL officials are eager to stick to the timeframe as it may not be possible to find another slot for the tournament, with most star players required for the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June.
