Pak player gets bail for fraud
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 17:15 [IST]

Pakistan's former cricketer and fielding coach Ejaz Ahmed, charged and arrested for an alleged fraud, was finally released on bail by the Lahore High Court today.

Ejaz, who is suffering from severe health problems and has spent most of the time in the services hospital in Lahore since his arrest in March, said he was relieved to get the bail.

"I was disappointed at the way my earlier bail applications were rejected but at least now I have got some relief. I am Innocent in this case these are all false charges against me," he said.

Some politicians have filed the fraud case against the former Pakistan player, claiming he issued them bogus cheques worth Rs 11 million in a property deal.

But Ejaz rubbished the charges against him.

"If I was not innocent I would not have got bail today. I will fight this case to the end to get my name cleared. The last seven weeks have been hell for me and my family," he said.

Ejaz, who played 60 Tests and 251 one-day internationals, was thrice denied bail by lower courts but he spent most of the time in hospital as he complained of severe asthma problems.

He was employed was a fielding coach at the National Cricket Academy.
