Melbourne: South African paceman Wayne Parnell has described as "strange" the moment when someone from the crowd flashed a laser light at him during his sides's Twenty20 match against Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday.

Parnell was trying to take a catch offered by Mike Hussey when he encountered the light.

"There was a green flash and it was pretty bright and the light seemed to be pointing towards me. It was all a bit strange," Parnell told the Herald Sun.

However, the teenaged paceman refused to make the incident as an excuse for dropping that chance.

"I only saw it then but maybe it was flashed around at other times, I am not sure. I am not making any excuses, I think it was a pretty valiant effort to take the catch.

"I wouldn't have caught it anyway. You have to be professional and I guess sometimes you have to deal with these things," he said

Australia beat South Africa by six-wicket victory in that match but the incident forced Cricket Australia to tender an apology to the visitors.

"It's just not cricket to do this sort of thing, it's stupid," Cricket Australia's public affairs manager Peter Young had said.
