Atletico Madrid asks fans not to travel
Tuesday, December 02, 2008 16:02 [IST]

Madrid: Atletico Madrid will not provide tickets to its fans for next week's Champions League away game against Olympique Marseille.

The Spanish club Monday asked fans not to travel to France for the game Dec 9, "given a lack of sufficient security guarantees."

The match between the two teams Oct 1 in Madrid featured clashes between French fans and Spanish police.

The violence led UEFA - following a complaint from Olympique Marseille - to close off the Vicente Calderon stadium for the game against PSV Eindhoven that was played before empty stands last week.

"The club asks all its fans to refrain from travelling to the French city, given a lack of sufficient security guarantees," said Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo.

"Consequently, the club has made the logical decision not to request tickets from Olympique and, therefore, not to sell tickets to any red-and-white fan for this game," Cerezo said.
