New York: A 32-year-old athlete from Argentina died after being rescued in unconscious state from Hudson River here following the swimming section of the race.
The 1500 meter swim, first part of the competition, was held in 32 degree Celsius temperatures with high humidity yesterday even as several swimmers reported that they were bitten by jellyfish which causes allergic reaction and rarely difficulty in breathing.
The swimmers said they were not warned about Jellyfish and taken by surprise.
Organisers did not reveal the identity pending informing the family but said that he was pulled out unconscious from the waters. It was not clear how long it took for the rescue.
The swim is followed by a 10-km bicycle race and a 10 km run. Some 3000 competitors participated in the event.
Among those who suffered heat exhaustion was a Canadian who collapsed a few feet from the finish line and later walked across the line and collapsed. Organisers say he had since then recovered.
Media reports said three other people have died in swim portion of Triathlons since May in Florida, Iowa and Oregon States.
Australians won both in Men and Women s events with Greg Bennett winning his fourth consecutive race in one hour 46 minutes and 30.9 seconds. Liz Blatchford won the women s event in 1 hour 58 minutes and 34.9 seconds.
