Sunday, July 20, 2008 15:44 [IST]

Raipur: Chhattisgarh-based hockey player Mrinal Chaubey, who displayed an impressive performance as goalkeeper in the junior Asia Cup hockey, was congratulated by Chief Minister Raman Singh for bringing fame to the state.

India beat South Korea 3-2 in extra time to win the title on July 18. Singh, who is presently holidaying in Bangalore, telephoned Mrinal on Saturday and appreciated "the splendid performance by all Indian team members in general and by Mrinal in particular," said official sources.

Mrinal, who hails from Durg, shone as goalkeeper in the Asia Cup. Wishing him a bright future, Singh said his "better performance in the junior Asia Cup has made Chhattisgarh proud." Dozens of hockey lovers accorded a hero's welcome to Mrinal as he reached Raipur's Mana airport from Hyderabad on Saturday.
