Atwal tied 11th Nationwide Tour golf tourney
Sunday, June 01, 2008 17:02 [IST]

Glenview (Illinois): Arjun Atwal overcame a disastrous stretch of three bogeys to come back with three birdies on the last five holes and finish tied 11th in a roller-coaster third round at the $750,000 Bank of America Open-one of the premier events on the Nationwide Tour.

That series of birdies on the last five holes on Saturday helped Atwal bring home a card of three-under 69 and it brought him to eight-under 208 and kept him in tied 11th place and that once again gives him the chance of a good finish that will help hum further his chances of a PGA card next season.

As Atwal lay four shots behind the leaders, up at the top there were three players Kris Blanks (69), Skip Kendall (71) and David McKenzie (67) deadlocked at 12-under par 204.

Atwal had a great start with a birdie on first that was supplement with another on fifth. But the following three holes were a nightmare. He had three bogeys in succession from the sixth to the eight to holes to slip down the board.

Regaining his composure with a birdie on 10th Atwal added birdies on 14th and 15th and then yet another on 16th. A par on 18th saw him close at 69 and gave him an outside chance at his first Nationwide title.

Atwal, winner of the Malaysian Open on Asian and European Tours this year, has also finished second at the Panama Movistar event on Nationwide this season.
