'Pathan, Sree won the match in first 6-7 overs'
Sunday, May 04, 2008 10:11 [IST]
yuvraj_01Mohali: After his side notched up their fourth victory on the trot in the IPL, Kings XI Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh said his side won the match against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first six or seven overs with new ball bowlers wrecking the opposition top order.

"They (David Hussey and Wriddhiman Saha) had a good partnership but we won the match in the first 6-7 overs," Yuvraj said after his side's nine-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders here.

"(Irfan) Pathan and S Sreesanth gave us the breakthrough with the new ball and that put pressure on the opposition batsmen," he added.

Yuvraj was happy that after the departure of Brett Lee, Sreesanth and Pathan had shouldered more responsibility.

"I told my bowlers that after Lee has left they have to take more responsibility and Sreesanth and Pathan did that today," he said.

He also praised Kumar Sangakkara for his commitment to the team by coming out later in the innings after retiring hurt in the sixth over.

"It speaks of his attitude as a cricketer. He came back and lent confidence to the lower order. He is fine, his injury is not serious," Yuvraj said.

Losing captain Sourav Ganguly said he was disappointed that his top order failed once again in a crucial match.

"Not just once or twice, for most of the IPL matches so far our top order has not been firing. We need runs from the top 3 or 4 to win matches," he said.

"A total of 179 was gettable on this pitch with fast outfield but our top order floundered again. I feel any match is a new one and we will have to improve," said Ganguly.
