SAfrica coach slams Kanpur Test pitch
Wednesday, April 16, 2008 20:45 [IST]

New Delhi: South Africa coach Mickey Arthur has criticised the "below par" pitch and facilities provided for the third and final Test in Kanpur, saying that his team deserved to be treated better.

"We are a major cricketing power, so we should get good venues and facilities. But Kanpur, to our disappointment, was way below par in everything. It was a poor cricket wicket, though I can understand the reason behind it," Arthur told Cricinfo.

"But the practice facilities and the accommodation left a lot to be desired for an international venue," he said three days after South Africa lost the match by eight wickets to draw the series 1-1.

The pitch at the Green Park Stadium assisted spinners and provided uneven bounce. This was after the second Test pitch in Ahmedabad provided assistance to pacers, which was believed to the main reason for India's innings defeat.

Many visiting teams have complained about the hotel and other facilities in Kanpur, one of the oldest and permanent Test centres of the country.

However, Arthur, who did not say much after the match in Kanpur, was all praise for the facilities in Ahmedabad and Chennai, where the first Test had ended in a draw. "Having said that, I must say that the facilities were excellent in Chennai and also in Ahmedabad," he said.
