Mumbai: The platinum jublilee year of the first ever cricket Test played on Indian soil was kicked off today by the Bombay Gymkhana, the venue of the contest between C K Naydu's Indian side and Douglas Jardine's Englishmen in 1933.
A logo commemorating the historic occasion for the willow game in India was released on the occasion by the Gymkhana in the presence of former India skipper Nari Contractor, former batsman Yajurvindra Singh and the grandson of C K Nayudu. Tomorrow the Gymkhana team will take on a team representing English county side Somerset to start the year-long celebrations which are to end on December 15, 2008.
The Gymkhana has planned to host an inter-club Twenty20 tournament, an under 13 tournament in the name of the famous and late sports broadcaster and columnist A F S Talyarkhan and a cricket quiz contest in his memory as part of its celebrations.
