PCB not to file appeal against Afridi's ban Monday, February 12, 2007 02:54 [IST]
KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided not to appeal against the four-match ban imposed by the ICC on Shahid Afridi for indulging in an altercation with a spectator during the first ODI against South Africa at Centurion."We are not going to appeal the ban. Mainly because the video evidence is very incriminating and the appeal will serve no purpose," a PCB official said.
The PCB's decision is a clear indication that Afridi is a certain for the squad to be announced for the World Cup. "Afridi will miss two matches of the current series and then the first two games against West Indies and Ireland in the World Cup, but the board is more keen to have him in the team for the Super Eight round of the tournament," he said. The official added that board Chairman Dr Naseem Ashraf would have a one-to-one talk with Afridi, who is returning home on Monday, warning him to refrain from such actions that brings a bad name to Pakistan cricket, or face a permanent axe from the team. Match referee Chris Broad had found Afridi guilty of indulging in the altercation as the cricketer was seen pushing his bat at the spectator who said something to him while returning to the dressing room after being dismissed cheaply in the match. Afridi also served a ban from the ICC last year in November and December for trying to scruff the pitch with his spikes during the second Test against England at Faisalabad. |
