Narain Karthikeyan says Formula 1 is the future
Thursday, February 08, 2007 11:28 [IST]

London: Narain Karthikeyan revealed he would like to continue to participate in the A1GP series for Team India so long as it does not impede his duties at Williams.

The Williams test driver took over responsibilities behind the wheel of the A1GP car a fortnight ago in New Zealand when he secured Team India’s first ever championship points.

“It was 16 months since I last competed in Formula One and I thought I needed to do something just to keep the racing juices flowing other than just testing,” he told espsnstar.com exclusively," he said.

It was a huge challenge as the performance of the team was pretty bad but the car was okay, it was my first time but it is very different to a Formula One car. At the moment it is a one-off but I will do another if it doesn’t clash with testing and my other commitments"

However, Karthikeyan had no doubts which formula he preferred and said the two disciplines are like “chalk and cheese”.

“There are a lot of differences between the two formulas. The tyres are different, there isn’t much aero in A1GP cars compared to F1 and there are no driver aids in an A1GP car whereas F1 has pretty much everything.”

He added: “What A1 does is it definitely brings the racing much closer together. The gap between the drivers is not much because the car is pretty easy to drive. The grid is all bunched up and so it produces exciting racing.”

Karthikeyan insisted however that Formula One is in a class of its own and is the future of motor racing.

"Formula One is always the pinnacle and always will be the pinnacle of motor racing because you are driving one of the fastest cars on the planet and there is a lot of technology involved," he said.

"I don’t believe in going down the purist route because it is old fashioned. This is the new way because of the technology," he said.
