Pak win in SA adds weight to Woolmer's CV
Tuesday, January 23, 2007 06:17 [IST]

Karachi: Pakistan's victory over South Africa in the second Test has come as a shot in the arm for coach Bob Woolmer and will undoubtedly raise his stock for future assignments after the World Cup.

Woolmer, a former England test player and South African team coach has already admitted interest in getting the job of England coach, which will be reviewed by England and Wales cricket Board after the World Cup.

ECB is expected to sign off with current coach, Duncan Fletcher who has drawn flak after the disastrous Ashes tour, and will certainly keep an eye on Woolmer's performance.

Woolmer's contract with the Pakistan team is until the World Cup and the Pakistan cricket board has indicated that it would be looking at a local choice.

"Going to South Africa he was definitely under pressure as having coached the South African team for five years this tour was his litmus test and everyone wanted to see how best he would use his coaching and communication skills to pass on the benefits of his inner knowledge of SA cricket," national selector, Iqbal Qasim said.

"If Pakistan can even draw the series there is no doubt Woolmer will be in greater demand after the World Cup," the official noted.

"Since being appointed coach of the Pakistan team in 2004 the victory in Port Elizabeth was Woolmer's biggest triumph even bigger than the win over India at Bangalore in 2005," a former Test player said.

The foreign coach has also been vindicated in his assessment of fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar.
