Wasim Bari in line for top post in PCB Wednesday, January 17, 2007 02:11 [IST]
Karachi:
Chief selector and former Test captain Wasim Bari is likely to be appointed as
the Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Bari has been
interviewed by the Board and its consultants and he himself is keen for the
job, sources said.
Bari has been
chief selector since 1998 except for a one-year period after the 2003 World Cup
when he was replaced by Aamir Sohail.
The former wicketkeeper, who played 81 Tests and 51 one-day internationals, is
among those Pakistani players who have a sound educational background. He is
also serving as a Director in the national airlines.
"Bari is due to retire from service in the airlines in September this year
and the CEO post would be ideal for him given his cricketing and administrative
background," sources told sources.
Interestingly, Bari
and PCB's Director of Cricket Operations, Saleem Altaf have never seen eye to
eye on many important issues.
The sources said other applicants had also been interviewed for CEO's post and
their credentials would be discussed at Tuesday's Ad-Hoc committee meeting in Islamabad.
The meeting is also due to finalise a new constitution for the Board under
which the board would cease to run on ad-hoc basis, which it has done since
1999 with the Chairman being directly appointed by the chief patron President
Pervez Musharraf.
Critics have questioned the running of the board on ad-hoc basis for such a
long period and point out that this system leads to unaccountability without
any check on financial dealings.
