Sevilla losses record to open up title race Tuesday, January 16, 2007 05:26 [IST]
Madrid: League leaders Sevilla lost their
100 percent home record and blew the Spanish title race wide open when they
went down 2-1 to struggling Real Mallorca on Sunday.
The huge upset means that Sevilla only have a two-point lead over reigning
champions Barcelona and the Catalan club, who lost 3-1 to local rivals Espanyol
on Saturday, also have a game in hand.
By contrast, Mallorca ease their relegation worries and climb two places
after starting the weekend just directly above the relegation zone.
Sevilla took the lead when Fredi Kanoute got his 15th goal of the season by
cleverly chipping a penalty past Mallorca
goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya after 21 minutes.
Moya had clumsily tried to tackle Sevilla's Jesus Navas but only managed to
foul him in his own area.
Portuguese defender Nunes brought Mallorca
back level three minutes after the break when he volleyed home a loose ball.
The visitors then took a surprise lead when sloppy defending left Jordi
Lopez free to take the ball into the box before pulling it back and leaving
Maxi Lopez to fire into Sevilla's open goal just after the hour.
"Both of their goals were gifts. We left them with an open goal on two
occasions in the second half," said Sevilla coach Juande Ramos.
"We've lost an opportunity to add three points although maybe people
were getting a little over-confident. At least, we are still on course to be in
the Champions League after 38 games."
Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano said the
performance proved his team belonged in the top flight.
"I think we demonstarted that we have the quality to survive at this
level. We taught the league leaders a thing or two and were deserved
winners," said Manzano.
"Winning is not a reason to start puffing our chests out but at least
we have eased some of the pressure."
Below Mallorca, all three bottom clubs lost
on Sunday to leave them deeper in relegation trouble.
Osasuna became the first top flight Spanish club to score five goals in a
game this season when they hammered Real Betis 5-1 to leave the Seville-based
side third from bottom.
"At least it is best to lose once by five goals than five times
1-0," reflected Betis coach Luis Fernandez.
Roberto Soldado and Paco Punal scored early goals to put Osasuna in front
but Betis's Arzu Garcia scored with a left-foot volley in the dying seconds of
the first half to bring his side briefly back into contention.
However, Osasuna got further goals after the break from David Lopez, Soldado
and Pierre Webo.
Real Sociedad, who are second from bottom, went down 1-0 at Racing Santander
after a controversial Ezequiel Garay penalty a minute from the whistle.
Bottom club Gimnastic Tarragona were comfortably beaten 3-1 at home by Getafe.
Getafe's
Victor Dorado headed home a Mario Cotelo free kick after 13 minutes and Daniel
Guiza added their second two minutes before half time.
Miguel Angel Llera got one back for Gimnastic on the hour but Francisco
Casquero scored Getafe's third goal 15 minutes before the whistle.
Diego Forlan got the only goal of the game in Villarreal's 1-0 win at
Athletic Bilbao, finding the net from a narrow angle after 70 minutes following
a wonderfully accurate long-range pass from Leandro Somoza.
However, the Villarreal hero was Forlan's Uruguayan compatriot and
goalkeeper Sebastian Viera, who made a series of outstanding saves and blocked
a penalty by Athletic's Francisco Yeste five minutes into injury time.
Atletico Madrid
remain in contention to return to European competition for the first time since
2000 following an inspired 3-1 win at Celta Vigo.
Spanish international Fernando Torres got two goals in the first 20 minutes
and Kun Aguero got Atletico's third just after half time before Celta's
Brazilian striker Nene reduced the deficit after 70 minutes.
