Friday, January 12, 2007 12:28 [IST]

Beijing: Olympic gold medal swimmer Luo Xuejuan is likely to miss the upcoming World Championships because of an undisclosed illness.

Luo, who won China's only gold medal in swimming in  Athens, is suffering from poor health, China's national team coach said Friday in the state run China Daily newspaper.

The World Championships are March 17 April 1 in Melbourne, Australia.

Luo is still not fit, coach Zhang Yadong told the newspaper. She needs further rest and is unable to take  part in daily training. Luo won gold in the 100 meter breaststroke in Athens, but last month she was left out of China's team at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

She is a four time world champion in the 50 and 100 meters breaststroke, but finished fourth in the 100 in the World Championships in 2005 in Montreal.

Zhang told the newspaper he did not know when Luo would return to daily training, and did not give details about her health problems.
