Wallaby Latham faces six-month recovery Friday, January 12, 2007 03:59 [IST]
Sydney: Wallaby fullback Chris Latham
remains confident of playing at the Rugby World Cup in France later this year after
confirmation Wednesday he will undergo knee reconstruction on Saturday.
Australian rugby's outstanding player last year tore both
his anterior cruciate and medial ligaments at Queensland Reds training last
weekend and he is expected to miss the entire Super 14 provincial series.
Queensland Reds medical staff Wednesday said his recovery was likely to take
six months.
"We suspect it is a high grade tear, but if there are still some fibres
attached we may leave it to repair itself, otherwise we will intervene to
reattach the ligament," a spokesperson for the Reds medical team said.
Despite the lengthy recuperation period the 31-year-old fullback remains
hopeful of returning for the World Cup in September.
"Like everything in my career, I've thankfully found the positive side
to it all," Latham told a press conference earlier.
"I've just come off two of my best seasons I've ever had, so the
confidence is definitely there, and now my body's going to be in the best shape
it's ever been," he said.
Latham also resolved to be in the 'best shape' for the World Cup, saying he
wanted to display his skills on the world stage this year.
