Barcelona held by 1-1 Real Madrid goes down Monday, January 08, 2007 04:35 [IST]
Madrid: Barcelona were
held 1-1 by midtable Getafe,
while Real Madrid were humiliated 2-0 to bogey team Deportivo Coruna.
The results leave Sevilla on top, despite Saturday's 2-1 loss
at Zaragoza. Sevilla have 37 points from 17
games, two points more than Barca, who have a game in hand.
After Sunday's loss Real remain in third place with 32
points, two more than Zaragoza and Valencia.
Barca went to Getafe
without suspended stars Ronaldinho and Deco and without several injury victims.
Getafe striker
Daniel Guiza took advantage of a rare mistake by Rafa Marquez to make it 1-0
after 55 minutes. Ten minutes later, Xavi Hernandez levelled for Barca with an
exquisite free-kick.
Gallant Getafe refused to settle for the draw, and Barca
keeper Victor Valdes had to make several sharp saves at the end.
"In the circumstances, this draw is not really a bad
result," said Barca coach Frank Rijkaard,
The draw looked even better two hours later, after Real had
again been beaten in La Coruna.
Real have not won in Riazor since 1992 and never looked
likely to this time, despite South American youngsters Fernando Gago and
Marcelo making their debuts.
After just nine minutes, Joan Capedevila gave the hosts the
lead with a clever free-kick that left Iker Casillas flat-footed.
Depor should have increased their lead before the break,
though at the other end Real midfielder Emerson Ferreira hit the bar.
Depor continued to dominate after the restart and went ahead
2-0 in the 55th minute when Cristian Hidalgo
turned in a centre from Angel Arizmendi - with Real claiming the ball had gone
out of play.
Real went from bad to worse toward the end and could have
conceded more goals.
"We were really poor tonight," conceded Real
captain Raul Gonzalez.
The impressive win takes Deportivo up to seventh from
bottom. Valencia,
meanwhile, moved up to fifth with their fourth consecutive win, 1-0 at a
Villarreal side that lacked creativity without Juan Roman Riquelme.
The only goal in Villarreal was put away 15 minutes from
time by Valencia
veteran Miguel Angel Angulo.
In sixth place with one point less than Valencia are Atletico Madrid. Just behind Atletico are surprise
package Recreativo Huelva, who won at Espanyol with a solitary goal by Jesus
Vazquez.
Another team to win on the road was Athletic Bilbao, for
whom veteran Ismael Urzaiz scored twice in the 3-1 win at Mallorca.
Also staying above the danger zone is Levante, who beat Racing
Santander 2-0 with goals from Diego Camacho and Olivier Kapo.
Luis Fernandez made a sound start in his new job as coach of
Betis with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo. The tight win, with a goal from Rafael
Sobis, leaves Betis third from bottom but now just one point below free-falling
Mallorca.
