We shouldn't play qualifiers next year: Sania Saturday, January 06, 2007 03:06 [IST]
Perth:After a commendable
show on debut in Hopman Cup,
India's star
tennis player Sania Mirza has suggested that her country be allowed to compete
in the mixed team tennis competition without having to go through the
qualifiers next year.
Sania and Rohan Bopanna staged upset wins against Czech
Republic and Croatia
before going down to second seed Spain yesterday and miss out on a
final berth.
The 20-year-old Hyderabad
girl also sought to underline the fact that Bopanna and she remained an
undefeated mixed doubles pair against quality opponents.
"It was great fun. I would like to thank my partner for playing. He played
great. We still have an undefeated mixed doubles record. We had great fun. It
was a great event to be in," she said.
"One request to (tournament director) Paul (McNamee) is, maybe we
shouldn't play qualifying next year," Sania added.
India booked a berth in the
competition after winning the Asian Hopman Cup in Hyderabad late last year.
Sania enjoyed a fine run in the tournament, winning her first two singles tie
before losing in the third against Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues who
is going to partner the Indian at the Australian Open.
