'Twenty20 will seriously affect Indian batting' Friday, December 29, 2006 03:06 [IST]
Mumbai: Former Cricket Board president Raj Singh Dungarpur
today sounded a warning that Twenty20 cricket will lead to further erosion of
Indian batting which is already showing the ill-effects of a overdose of
one-day cricket.
"I am a part of the Cricket Board and Mr Sharad Pawar (BCCI chief) has
done a lot for the game, but I am afraid that Twenty20 cricket will be the
final nail on the coffin of Indian cricket," Dungarpur said at a book
release function here.
"Because of the preponderance of one-day cricket today no Indian batsman
looks capable of saving a Test match. There are a few who can win the matches
but saving a match under intense pressure is even more difficult," said
Dungarpur.
"Twenty20 cricket will lead to further erosion of Indian batsmen's
technique and temperament (in Test cricket)", he further said while
expressing dismay at the Indian team's display in the ongoing second Test
against South Africa at Durban.
Extolling the feats of former middle order Test batsman Sandeep Patil, who has
co-authored the book of funny cricket anecdotes "Caught and Told"
with senior sports scribe Clayton Murzello, Dungarpur said there were very few
cricketers who would support the inclusion of another player at the danger of
losing his own place as Patil did during his career.
"I was the manager of the team in England in 1986 when Patil pleaded with
me repeatedly to somehow include 'Jimmy' (Mohinder) Amarnath even though that
would have meant his own exclusion (from the eleven). But both played
ultimately," he recalled. |
