Formula I: Brawn concedes on Hungary mistake
Friday, December 22, 2006 04:28 [IST]

London
: Rss Brawn has confessed that he made a mistake during this year's action-packed Hungarian Grand Prix, admitting Ferrari got in a 'fluster' during the race.

The race, which was severely affected by rain, saw Michael Schumacher fighting to retain his position in the closing stages of the race on tyres which were deteriorating lap by lap.

Ferrari only managed to score a single point in Budapest despite Fernando Alonso going out earlier in the race.

Ferrari had opted to keep the then second-placed Schumacher on wets, whilst everyone else decided to switch to slicks – it was a disastrous decision that ultimately cost them the world championship.

"Well you have these unusual races where the track's getting drier and the tyre situation is developing by the minute, and we got ourselves in a bit of a fluster in that race, to be frank, both in the pit wall and car and in the race," Brawn revealed in an interview due to be screened on British television on New Year's Eve.

"Not a race I'm very proud of," he added. '

"There was some thinking behind what was going on it wasn't totally irrational but when I stepped back and looked at how we ran that weekend we didn't do a very good job. I really wished I'd said to Michael 'Hang on, we're going to get the points we can here'," he said.

"But he's a racer and that's in his DNA, and I am as well and if I think there's a chance that maybe we can do a bit better than we should have done...everyone wants to do a bit better than they should have done.

"Nobody wants to do what they should have done or a bit less, everyone wants to do a bit more, because it's the nature of our business and why we're involved.

"And we thought there was an opportunity there, there was a dry line, the guys on the dry tyres had to go onto the wet part of the track to overtake. It just didn't work out so that was a big regret," he said.
