Paris: Korean ski resort Pyeongchang
received a boost on Wednesday in its bid to win the right to host the 2014
Winter Olympics as teenage golf star Michelle Wie agreed to become an Honorary
Ambassador.
The 17-year-old American whose parents are Korean agreed after months of
negotiations to accept the role after further talks with the Chairman of the
Bid Committee Han Seung-soo. Wie, who has yet to triumph on the senior US women's LPGA tour but has finished
third at two majors, the Kraft Nabisco and the US Open, and fifth at the LPGA
Championship this year, said that it had not been a difficult decision to come
to. "I'm proud of my Korean heritage and also a big fan of winter
sports," said Wie. "If the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are held in
Pyeongchang I'm sure that they will be a fantastic and memorable experience for
the athletes, Olympic Family and spectators. I know well that visitors to Korea are always
made to feel very welcome," she
said. Han, a former foreign minister and ambassador to the United Nations, was
delighted with Wie's coming on board. "We are grateful to Michelle Wie for taking time out of her busy
schedule to support Pyeongchang's bid," said the 70-year-old. "She has already achieved so much in her short career and is a great
role model for women in sport in Korea and around the world. It is talented, committed athletes of Michelle's generation who could
be competing for medals in Pyeongchang in 2014," he said. Pyeongchang, who lost narrowly to Vancouver
in the race for the 2010 Winter Olympics, will learn its fate on July 4 2007 inGuatemala City where it is up against the
Austrian resort of Salzburg and the Russian
resort of Sochi. |
