'National Games to go ahead as per schedule' Thursday, December 21, 2006 04:50 [IST]
New Delhi: The Indian Olympic
Association today decided to go ahead with the National Games in Assam despite
ULFA's call to boycott the event over its nomenclature.
The IOA, at its General Body meeting here, concluded that the Games would be
held in the state capital Guwahati as scheduled from February 9 to 18 next year
amidst tight security provided by the Centre.
"The National Games would be held in Guwahati from February 9-18. We have
given approval for this after Assam
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is also the President of the state Olympic
Association, made a satisfactory presentation at the meeting," IOA
President Suresh Kalmadi told sources.
"The security would be beefed up in the state for the Games and Home
Ministry would take care of it," he added.
The ULFA were opposed to conduct of the already twice-postponed Games saying it
would allow the event only if it was named 'Assam Sports Meet'.
"The next edition of the Games would be held in Ranchi," Kalmadi said.
In another significant decision, IOA ammeded its existing constitution by
making it compulsory for those contesting for the post of president, senior
vice-president and secretary general of the Association to be a member of the
preceding IOA Executive Council for four years.
"We have made the amendment on the lines of the International Council
making it mandatory for election to the posts of president, senior
vice-president and secretary general of IOA that only those who held the office
of the preceding executive council for four years will be eligible to
contest," Kalmadi said. |
