Asia gunning for revenge against int'l team Friday, December 15, 2006 05:57 [IST]
 Singapore:The
world's top women golfers tee off Friday in the US LPGA season-ending Lexus
Cup, and Asia are gunning for revenge after being soundly beaten by the
Internationals in the inaugural event last year.
"We'd love to have the same results as last year but I think the Asian
team is going to come out quite strong and be looking for revenge," said
world No.1 Annika Sorenstam, who is captaining the International team, ahead of
the matchplay tournament.
"Looking at the team, we are very strong so there'll be some good
matches," she said.
Last year, the Internationals thwarted the Asian challenge 16-8 and the
event proved so successful that the US Ladies Professional Golf
Association (LPGA) officially sanctioned it this year as the season-ending
event.
Grace Park is skippering the Asian team and has just thing on her mind revenge.
"We're going play better, and we're going win," she said here
Thursday.
"Looking at the lineup, we have very young and talented top golfers. We
have a pretty good idea of who we're going to be paired together with, which
strategy we're going to take, how we really want to win this Lexus Cup," she said.
The Asian team is Korea-heavy and Park will be relying on nine fellow Seoul
Sisters', including LPGA Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak and 2006 Rookie of The Year
Seon-Hwa Lee.
The only non-Koreans recruited to the cause are Jennifer Rosales of the Philippines, Taiwan's
Candie Kung and Japan's
Sakura Yokomine.
"Golf is a simple game. We just have to play well, and I believe in my
players," added Park," she said.
"We'll work as a team and so far this week, these girls know what to
do. It is very important for us to get ahead early. Last year, we got a little
nervous but looking at the team, we're stronger and better now," she said.
They have their work cut out at Tanah Merah Country Club with Sorenstam
having the likes of US
stars Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Sherri Steinhauer and
Brittany Lincicome alongside her.
"It is definitely an exciting time to be playing on the LPGA Tour with
so many good veterans, and up and coming players," said Pressel, who is
only 18 but has had eight top-10 finishes this season.
"Tournaments like the Lexus Cup help to bring publicity and assist the
growth of the women's game and I will do whatever I can to help grow the trend
in popularity," she said. |
