India clinches unexpected bronze in wrestling

Doha: Vinayak Dalvi provided Indian with an unexpected bronze medal in the men's Greco-Roman wrestling event of the Asian Games, by winning his last bout in the 55 kg category here.


The 21-year-old won his first bout in the morning session but lost the second in the evening at the Aspire Hall.

However, the play off for the bronze medal was necessitated as Kyrgyzstan's Rinat Usupjanov also had an identical three points.

The Indian beat Rinat 3-1 with 11 techical points as against 8 by his rival in the bronze-medal bout late last night.

"I was confident and I was fully trained for the event," Dalvi said after winning India's first medal on the mat.

"I am aiming for a gold in the Olympics now," he added.

Following the bronze, India's overall medal tally stood at 6-13-13.
