Doha: India were assured of a medal in the Asian Games
tennis event with the women's team cruising into the final by taking an
unsassailable 2-0 lead against Uzbekistan here tonight.
The women's team comprising Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi will now take on Taipei in the final
tomorrow.
While Sania, ranked 67th in the world had an easy outing, Shikha had to sweat
it out before quelling the spirited challenge of Akgul Amanmuradova with a hard-fought
7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory in a marathon tussle which lasted 189 minutes.
Sania hardly had to break a sweat in the second singles by getting the better
of iroda Tulyaganova with a straight set 6-3 6-0 verdict in a lop-sided contest
which lasted just 54 minutes.
In the other women's team semi-final, Taipei
defeated a sprited japan 2-1.
