Fiji moves ahead with rugby tournament Thursday, December 07, 2006 04:24 [IST]
Suva: Fiji's rugby union chiefs promised
to press ahead with the international sevens rugby tournament next month,
despite mounting pressure to isolate the country following the military coup.
"Our plans have not changed," Fiji Rugby chief executive Timoci
Tavanavanua said.
"We are in the process of writing to all the invited teams to reassure
them that this tournament will continue as planned and that the safety of
players and officials would not be in danger," he said.
Fiji,
the reigning world sevens champions, has not hosted an international sevens
tournament since a previous coup attempt by George Speight in 2000.
The New Zealand
government, one of the first to impose sanctions on Fiji
after Tuesday's coup, said it will hold discussions with sporting organisations
scheduled to attend tournaments in Fiji.
New Zealand
has already banned Fijian sports teams from entering the country unless
required to under international sporting obligations, a decision which has
angered opposition parties.
The Greens and United Future parties want Fiji barred from the New Zealand
round of the International Rugby Board sevens series in February if a
democratic government is not restored in Suva by then.
"Sevens Rugby means a lot to Fiji
and being allowed to participate in the Wellington
tournament will be used by the regime as recognition of its legitimacy,"
United Future leader Peter Dunne said. |
