Leander hungry for more Asian Games medals Monday, December 04, 2006 04:17 [IST]
Doha: Indian tennis icon Leander Paes is no stranger to pressure situations and even relishes the challenge of winning medals for the country whenever he dons the India colours.
And as he took the courts for the fourth time in the Asian Games this morning, he only had one thought in his mind win more medals.
It was 16 years ago in Beijing, that the 33-year-old star won his first Asian Games medal a bronze in the team event and the years may have rolled by but not his hunger to excel.
Paes skipped the recent Asian Hopman Cup mixed team event in Hyderabad because of a finger injury but said it is not bothering him now.
"The finger is coming along fine. I am close to one hundred per cent. It does not hinder me and it's not a problem for the power in my strokes"", he said.
The experienced campaigner that he is, Paes does not foresee any problems with the windy conditions at the venue.
"I am relaxed, it is very windy, but you have to keep a sense of humour in these circumstances. I am just getting used to the slow courts, the winds and the changes in weather here in Doha", the Davis Cupper said.
Paes, who had won doubles title at the Wimbledon and the French Open, wants to treat the Asian Games as a stepping stone for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
"It will be fantastic to win a medal here and in the Beijing Games. I always love to play for my country," he said.
