Tennis ace Lee faces uphill battle in Doha
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 06:23 [IST]

Doha: Lee Hyung Taik, beaten finalist of the Busan Games tennis men's singles, has set his eyes on the Doha Asian Games gold, but the player's fitness will be a cause of concern.

"I am a little bit concerned about his fitness and I am not sure if Lee will play in the men's team event," said South Korean coach Jeon Young Dai at the Khalifa Tennis Courts Tuesday.

"During the last four months Lee has reached the top 50 in the world rankings and he is very tired after the long season," he said.

But the player is upbeat about his chances in Doha. "I hope to win the gold medal, but the overall level of Asian tennis players has improved a lot. No match will be easy, but if I give my best I hope to get a good result," said the 30-year-old Lee.

At Busan four years ago, Thai Paradorn Srichaphan beat the stubborn South Korean to win the singles title.

"Srichaphan will probably be the toughest opponent. All the Japanese players are also good and there are two Filipino players, who were born in the US and also have a chance," Lee added.

In Doha, Lee and Srichaphan, Asia's current top two players, will most probably meet again.
