West Indies make steady reply in third Test
Tuesday, November 28, 2006 03:51 [IST]

Karachi: The West Indies made a confident start to their first innings as they pressed for a series-levelling win in the third and final Test against Pakistan.

The tourists bowled out Pakistan for 304 and reached 42-0 in reply by lunch on the second day at the National stadium in Karachi, with openers Chris Gayle (31) and Daren Ganga (nine) unbeaten at the break.

Earlier, Pakistan added 47 runs to their overnight score of 257-7 to be out for 304 in their first-innings.

Pakistan let off Gayle on 12 when Imran Farhat failed to hold on to an uppish drive at extra cover off luckless Umar Gul. Gayle has so far hit four boundaries during his knock.

Pakistan lead the three-match series 1-0 following their nine-wicket win in the first Test at Lahore. The second Test ended in a draw at Multan.

Corey Collymore, who returned the Windies' best figures of 3-57, removed Kamran Akmal (31) with the first delivery of the second new ball after Akmal hit two boundaries off Daren Powell in the first over of the morning.

Powell provided the visitors with the first breakthrough when he bowled Shahid Nazir without scoring in the second over of the day.

Gul added 32 for the last wicket with Danish Kaneria, who remained unbeaten on seven, before Powell returned for his second spell to finish with 2-83.

Pakistan's total was bolstered by a masterly 102 by Mohammad Yousuf, who set a new world record with eight centuries in a calendar year on Monday, beating the mark set by West Indies legend Viv Richards.
