Two more Thais join Royal Trophy team
Tuesday, November 28, 2006 03:26 [IST]

Bangkok: Two more Thais, Thaworn Wiratchant and Prom Meesawat, have been selected for the Asian team to play against Europe in the Royal Trophy in January.

The decision by Asian captain Joe Ozaki gives Thailand the biggest representation of any country on the Asian team, with only one more player left for him to choose.

They will challenge Seve Ballesteros's European team at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok from January 12-14. Europe narrowly beat Asia 9-7 in the inaugural event last year.

Ozaki last week tapped Thailand's golfing hero Thongchai Jaidee, as well as two of Japan's top players, Toru Taniguchi and Tetsuji Hiratsuka.

The Korean duo of Yang Yong-eun, hot from his win over Tiger Woods in Shanghai, and S.K. Ho have also been selected for the Asian team.

The European side is packed with Ryder Cup players including Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson.

For Thailand's Prom, being named to the team is the latest in a string of achievements since he won his first of two world junior titles in 1997 -- when he was only 13.

Now 22, he's established himself as one of Asia's best golfers by winning the SK Telecom Open in South Korea and becoming the second highest ranked player on the Asian Tour.

Thaworn made a strong showing in the inaugural event last year, winning two of his three matches.

"I will go into the Royal Trophy with a lot of confidence. I was fortunate to win two out of my three matches last time, and I know we can do it if we try hard and play with the right team strategy," he said.

The Royal Trophy will consist of three formats foursomes (alternate shot) on the opening day, followed by four-ball on day two and singles on the last day.
