Eng gains early breakthrough Jaques' wicket
Tuesday, November 14, 2006 03:49 [IST]

Sydney: England gained an early breakthrough with the wicket of New South Wales first-innings century-maker Phil Jaques in the first over of the second innings of their tour match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Jaques, who scored two centuries in three days against England, was run out going for a suicidal single on the fourth ball of the innings on Tuesday.

Sajid Mahmood swooped in from mid-on to knock down the stumps at the bowler's end.
At lunch, NSW were five for one to hold an overall lead of 11 runs after they dismissed England for 349, shortly before the interval.

England also had an early concern with Test paceman Matthew Hoggard appearing to suffer a side strain after bowling the opening ball of the NSW second innings.

Kevin Pietersen completed his century in England's innings after going to stumps on Monday unbeaten on 80, while Australian Test aspirant Stuart Clark finished with 3-50 off 17 overs.

Pietersen advanced down the wicket to swing bowler Nathan Bracken and holed out to Brett Lee at deep mid-on for 122.

He spent 258 minutes in the middle and cracked 18 boundaries and two sixes off 171 balls.

Skipper Andrew Flintoff was bowled for 62 off an inside-edge giving Stuart Clark his third wicket of the innings.

Paul Collingwood missed an opportunity to lock down his Test chance with only a 15-minute occupation of the crease before he offered a catch to Jaques at bat-pad off spinner Nathan Hauritz for five.

Geraint Jones, preferred over Chris Read as England's wicketkeeper for the November 23 first Ashes Test, was bowled for 13 by one from Glenn McGrath that kept low.
Lee sent the middle stump of Ashley Giles flying to dismiss the off-spinner for nine and Bracken bowled Steve Harmison for two to finish the innings.

NSW's Test pace pair McGrath (2-63) and Lee (2-57) got through a useful workout for the Brisbane Test, while left-armer Bracken finished with 2-51.
