December for Kameda's rematch with Landaeta Friday, October 6 2006 18:26 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Tokyo:
A rematch of World Boxing Association (WBA) light flyweight champion Koki Kameda's 'dubious' split decision victory over Juan Landaeta has been rescheduled for December 20, his handlers said Thursday.
It will be fought at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo.
The bout was originally set for October 18, but was postponed because Kameda picked up an injury during sparring.
The controversial fight in August between the notoriously flamboyant 19-year-old Japanese and the 27-year-old Venezuelan caused many fans and boxing experts to claim Kameda did not deserve to win.
Kameda suffered the first knockdown of his career in the fight's opening round and was cut above his right eye.
He escaped the onslaught by clinching, though at one point he backed his Venezuelan opponent towards the ropes with a flurry of crisp jabs.
Some of the audience left the arena before the judges' decision was announced, assuming that the Japanese had lost.
But the judges handed him the title vacated by Panama's Roberto Vasquez.
Landaeta said after the match: "Of course I won. As everybody in the stadium saw, the judge was wrong. He is an extremely weak boxer. He is just a kid. He has a lot to learn."
Kameda has an unbeaten record of 12 wins, including 10 knockouts, while Landaeta, ranked No.1 by the WBA, has 20 wins, including 16 knockouts, against four defeats and one draw.
