Batting great Dilip Vengsarkar is Wednesday (27 Sep, 2006) appointed as Chairman of the Selection Committee as the Cricket Board re-constituted some of its high-profile committees and vested key responsibilities on elite former cricketers.
Vengsarkar, a former captain who played 116 Tests and 129 one-dayers, takes over the hot seat from the controversial Kiran More whose four-year term had come to an end.
Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev is appointed as Chairman of the National Cricket Academy's Board, replacing another legend Sunil Gavaskar who however is retained as Chairman of BCCI's Technical Committee.
Former left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju is another new entrant in the five-member selection panel as a representative of the South Zone in place of V B Chandrasekhar.
The appointments are announced by Treasurer N Srinivasan after the 77th Annual general meeting here in which incumbent Sharad Pawar is formally declared elected un-opposed as President for a two-year term.
Vengsarkar replaces More not only as the West Zone nominee but also as the panel's chief.
The other three members of the committee, North's Bhupinder Singh Sr, East's Ranjib Biswal and Central's Sanjay Jagdale, are re- appointed for a two-year term.
Sanjeev Sharma, former India pacer who has also represented Delhi and Railways, is nominated as the Chairman of the National Junior Selection Committee in place of incumbent Pravin Amre.
