Talukdar, Hansda enter finals of Archery WC Thursday, September 28 2006 12:18 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
World number two Jayant Talukdar, along with Viswash and Mangal Singh, make the finals of the men's individual finals of the Recurve event in the Archery World Cup in Shanghai in China.
Talukdar, who had briefly led the world rankings, finishes ninth in the qualification round while Mangal Singh is lucky enough to sneak into the main round as the tenth and the last archer. The Indian duo are tied at 652 points along with world rank third Magnus Petersson of Sweden.
But the surprise is Vishwash, who was safely in, ending up seventh amassing 653 scores and Olympian Tarundeep Rai, who fails to make the cut finishing 28th at 637 points.
Similar is the case of the golden Italian trio of Ilario Di Buo, who is the current World Cup leader, Michele Frangilli and Olympic Champion Marco Galiazzo. Just a whisker ending up 11th leaves out Frangilli.
Korean stars Kyung-Mo Park (662) and IM Dong Hyun (661) make an amazing comeback finishing second and third behind compatriot Chang Hwan Lee (663).
The four semifinalists will qualify for the Grand Final slated to be held in Mexico.
In the women's event, only Chekrovolu Swuro qualifies for the final with 645 points while star archers Dola Banerjee and Reena Kumari miss the grade finishing 41st and 12th respectively. Another Indian, Punya Prabha is 22nd.
Jhano Hansdah also keeps herself in the contention for booking the World Cup final berth by just about managing a 10th place finish in a tough field in individual women's compund qualification. But her compatriots Manjuda Soy, Bhaigyabati Chanu and Sweety Kumari are left behind.
