Moya crashes out of Kingfisher Airlines Open Wednesday, September 27 2006 13:13 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Former world number one Carlos Moya of Spain is knocked out of the USD 380,000 Kingfisher Airlines Open by unheralded Juan Martin Del Potro in the men's singles first round at the CCI courts here Tuesday (26 Sep, 2006).
His Argentine rival ranked over sixty places below him 6-3, 6-2 outclasses Moya, a former French Open title winner on steep decline.
The shock victory, the second of the day after Austrian Stefan Koubek's 7-6, 6-4 verdict over seventh-seeded Juan Monaco, pits Porto against Paraguayan Ramon Delgado in the second round.
Delgado leads 6-3, 2-1 against Italian David Sanguinetti when the latter retires due to a bout of gastroenteritis.
Earlier, India number one Rohan Bopanna fought gamely before going down in three sets to eighth-seeded South African Wesley Moodie in a match of big servers.
Wild card recipient Bopanna, ranked 275 in the world, is not disgraced while going down to the 73rd ranked Moodie who wins 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to earn a second round meeting with British qualifier James Auckland.
The South African's superior experience under pressure is crucial to the ultimate result.
Though Bopanna dominates the opening set when his serves were on target and ground- strokes steady, he cannot really match the South African's aggressive play from the beginning of the second set.
The Indian makes a lot of unforced errors from the back court, 67 compared to the South African's 53, but also dished out 14 aces, as against Moodie's 18.
