BCCI Prez has to be from West as per revisions Friday, September 22 2006 11:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
The next Indian Cricket Board President, to be elected at the 77th AGM here on September 27 and 28 would be a representative of the West Zone, according to the amended constitution of the BCCI.
"As per the amendments that were carried out at the Special General Meeting of the Board held in Mumbai earlier this year, each zone would have a three-year term for heading the BCCI and it's West Zone's turn for the next two years, starting last year," a top board source says.
"After West's turn, the President would be elected from the Central Zone. However, to contest for the President's post, a candidate needs to be a present or past office-bearer of the board or should have attended at least two AGMs. Besides, he should be proposed by a representative from another association belonging to the same zone," he says.
Current incumbent Sharad Pawar, who takes over the reins of the BCCI after an acrimonious AGM at Kolkata last year, belongs to the West Zone and is also the president of the Mumbai Cricket Association.
In the BCCI West Zone is represented by Mumbai Cricket Association, Maharashtra Cricket Association, Cricket Club of India, Gujarat Cricket Association, Baroda Cricket Association and Saurashtra Cricket Association.
As per the amendments carried out in the board's constitution, which has increased the term of the President, office-bearers and selection committee members to two years from one, only a representative from any other association from the West Zone can unseat Pawar.
