Shikha loses, two seeds fall by the wayside Wednesday, September 20 2006 11:49 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
India's Shikha Uberoi pays the price for an erratic display to bow out of the USD 175,000 WTA Sun feast Open with a straight set defeat over Czech girl Hana Sromova in the opening round here Tuesday (19 Sep, 2006).
The 23-year-old Shikha loses 4-6 3-6 in the 77-minute duel as Sromova sets up a second round clash with Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, who shows the door to compatriot and eighth seed Anastassia Rodionova earlier in the day.
The other upset is the defeat of the third seeded Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak who is stunned 4-6 2-6 by Italian Alberta Brianti in the day's first match on the centre court.
World number 193 Shikha hits some brilliant winners but undo the good work by conceding too many negative points.
In the opening set, the first nine games go with serve. However, Shikha, downs on a break point, commits a double fault to surrender the game and set to Sromova, who plays a steady game.
In the second set, Sromova demolishes Shikha's serve in the fourth game to pocket the set and the match.
The clash between the two Russian girls sees Kudryavtseva winning 1-6, 6-3 6-3 in a three setter on court number one.
In the first set, Rodionova breaks Kudryavtseva in the first, fifth and seventh games, to take the lead.
Kudryavtseva, however, stages a strong comeback in the second set as she demolishes Rodionova in the first game. However, the higher ranked player draws level by breaking Kudryavtseva in the fourth game.
