Crewe sends out Wigan at English League Cup
Wednesday, September 20 2006 13:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

London: Premiership club Wigan is sent crashing out of the English League Cup by lowly Crewe on Tuesday (19 Sep, 2006) as they lose 2-0.

Paul Jewell's side has enjoyed a successful run to the final of the competition last season before losing to Manchester United in the Cardiff showpiece.

But goals from Crewe strikers Rodney Jack and Nicky Maynard ensure there will be no repeat this season as they secure a famous win for the League One team at Gresty Road.

Jewell has made five changes to the side that draws at Everton on Saturday (16 Sep, 2006). And without former England striker Emile Heskey and veteran defender Arjan de Zeeuw they struggle to compete with their lower division opponents. Jack puts Crewe ahead three minutes before half-time with a superb finish from Luke Varney's cross for his first goal since rejoining Dario Gradi's side in pre-season before Maynard seals the victory in the 90th minute.

Newly-promoted Premiership side Watford are made to sweat by League Two Accrington Stanley, who puts Nottingham Forest out in the previous round, before finally scraping through on penalties.

Adrian Boothroyd's side is held to a 0-0 draw after extra-time against a side who are playing non-league football in the Conference last season. But they finally triumphs on penalties as they win the shoot-out at Vicarage Road 6-5.

Reading, who was promoted from The Championship with Watford, also emerges unscathed from a penalty shoot-out against League Two Darlington.

Royals boss Steve Coppell has made ten changes to the team that won at Sheffield United on Saturday (16 Sep, 2006) and gives debuts to Cameroon defender Andre Bikey, Ecuador fullback Ulises De la Cruz and Hungarian midfielder Peter Mate.

But Bikey makes a calamitous start at his new club when he gives away a penalty and Simon Johnson converted the spot-kick.

Leroy Lita sparks a goal-rush when he equalises and just three minutes later David Hodgson's side is back in front through Julian Joachim, but Lita levels again only a minute later.

Joachim put Darlington back into the lead in the 52nd minute but Darlington defender David Duke is sent off late on and Mate rescues Reading with an equaliser in the 86th minute. Coppell's side is taken to penalties but wins 4-2 in the shoot-out. Surprise Premiership leaders Portsmouth eases into the third round at League Two Mansfield.

First-half goals from Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes, on his debut, and Matt Taylor put Portsmouth in control before Danny Reet pulls one back for Mansfield.

Everton boss David Moyes leaves Australia midfielder Tim Cahill and England striker Andy Johnson on the bench for his side's trip to Peterborough and he nearly regrets his gamble.

A Jude Stirling own goal gives Everton the lead but Trevor Benjamin brought League Two Peterborough back into the game in the 56th minute with a header from Dean Holden's corner.

Moyes sends on Cahill to try and win it before extra time and the Socceroos star seals a 2-1 win with a clinical finish just three minutes from full-time.

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce gets some welcome relief from the allegations in a BBC television programme on Tuesday (19 Sep, 2006) that he has taken 'bungs' to sign and sell players as his side wins 3-1 at League Two Walsall.

Kevin Nolan gives Bolton the lead before Martin Butler levels for the home side. But Spanish midfielder Ivan Campo scores with just two minutes remaining and France striker Nicolas Anelka hits his first goal since his club record eight million pounds move from Fenerbahce to ensure the win.

Charlton's recent history is littered with embarrassing cup defeats against unfancied opposition, but England striker Darren Bent's second half goal gave Iain Dowie's side a 1-0 home victory against Carlisle.

Sheffield United has yet to win in the Premiership since promotion last season and they only just scraped past League Two Bury with a 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane.
