Sevilla, Barcelona and Valencia have it easy Tuesday, September 19 2006 11:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Madrid:
Football clubs Sevilla, Barcelona and Valencia chalk up their third victories to remain unbeaten and untied in the Primera Liga.
Sevilla beats neighbours Betis 3-2, Barca cruises to a 3-0 win in Santander, and Valencia downs Getafe 2-0.
Sunday's (17 Sep, 2006) other big news is Real Madrid's 2-0 win over lowly Real Sociedad, which now puts them in the fourth place.
Sevilla, Barca and Valencia are joint top at nine points, with Sevilla first, thanks to having scored one goal more than Barca.
Sevilla needed a classy late goal from Brazilian Renato to dispose of Betis, who twice come from behind with strikes from newly acquired Rafael Sobis.
"We had to work really hard to earn our three points today," says Federic Kanoute, who put away Sevilla's first two goals.
Barcelona, on the other hand, has a pleasant evening. Samuel Eto'o gives them an early lead with his fourth goal of the season; a long shot that Santander keeper Tono Rodriguez makes a mess of.
Barca wastes good chances to finish off the hosts. In the 83rd minute, Ludovic Giuly makes it 2-0 with a left-foot shot. Four minutes from time, Tono is sent off for pulling down Eidur Gudjohnsen, and Ronaldinho calmly puts away the penalty.
Their third defeat leaves Santander rock bottom and in big trouble.
The star of the show in Valencia, meanwhile, is winger Vicente Rodriguez.
On the stroke of halftime, Rodriguez centres for Fernando Morientes to head in Valencia are first. Towards the end, Vicente makes it 2-0 from the penalty spot, after being pulled down by the weary Getafe defence.
In fourth place, two points behind the top three are Real Madrid, who beats Real Sociedad with goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and David Beckham.
Once again, though, the Estadio Bernabeu is far from pleased with the dull display of Fabio Capello's team, who only broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a clever Reyes free kick.
Sociedad does not come out of their defensive shell until injury time, and then allows Beckham to score on the break.
Deportivo Coruna, who beats troubled Deportivo Coruna 2-0 Saturday (16 Sep, 2006), is level on seven points with Real.
Zaragoza moves up to sixth with a 2-0 defeat Sunday (17 Sep, 2006) of Mallorca. Level on six points with Zaragoza is Atletico Madrid and Getafe.
Atletico turns in the performance of the weekend, thrashing hapless Athletic Bilbao 4-1 away.
Atletico's teenage sensation Sergio Aguero is man of the match and opens his account in Spain with a handsome goal.
In Sunday's (17 Sep, 2006) other games, Espanyol, Osasuna and Levante all pick up their first points, with tight wins over Celta Vigo, Gimnastic Tarragona and Recreativo Huelva.
