WC Hockey: Dutch keep semi-final hopes alive Tuesday, September 12 2006 11:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Monchengladbach:
Two brilliant penalty corner conversions by Taeke Taekema on either side of his yellow card suspension lifts the Netherlands to a 4-3 win against England and keeps their hopes alive of a semi-final berth in the men's hockey World Cup here Monday (11 Sep, 2006).
The victory takes the Dutch to seven points, the same as champions Germany, after four matches while England remain on three.
Trailing 0-2 at one stage, the Dutch retaliates in style with veteran Teun de Nooijer playing a lead role in their great fight back.
England goes 2-0 ahead with James Tindall (10th) and Richard Mantell (13th) breaching the Dutch defence. However, the Dutch comes back when Teun de Nooijer deflects a long hit in the 18th and Ronald Brouwer scoring off a rebound from a goalmouth scramble.
On resumption, Tindall makes it 3-2 for England when he scores off a Matt Daly pass, but the Dutch are far from finished as Taekema converts a penalty corner in the 45th and almost immediately sends out on a yellow card. He returns in time to put home the sixth Dutch penalty corner in the 63rd minute for a rousing victory.
