Federer wins the US Open defeating Roddick Monday, September 11 2006 11:03 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New York:
Switzerland's Roger Federer wins the US Open men's singles title for the third consecutive year on Sunday (10 Sep, 2006) defeating American Andy Roddick 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the final.
Federer also becomes the first player to win back-to-back Wimbledon and US Open titles for three years in a row.
The 25-year-old Swiss captures his ninth Grand Slam and third major title of 2006 and he does it in superb fashion by dropping only two sets in the tournament.
"I am happy it all worked out," Federer says. "It was difficult against Andy. I am happy to see him back at the top."
His latest major title follows earlier victories at this year's Australian Open and at Wimbledon.
Federer has his full arsenal of weapons on display Sunday (10 Sep, 2006) serving brilliantly against Roddick and barely breaking a sweat in getting three breaks in the first set in front of a crowd of 23,000 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After Roddick takes the second set in 37 minutes, Federer wins the third set 7-5 with the only break coming in the final game.
Federer gets two more early breaks in the fourth set against a deflated-looking Roddick, taking the final eight of nine games of the 2hr, 27mins match.
In picking up his ninth Grand Slam title Federer takes sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list passing Andre Agassi, who is retiring and played his final match here last Sunday (10 Sep, 2006).
Only five men have won more major titles than Federer with Pete Sampras heading the list at 14.
It also seems dominance appeals to the dominant as golfer Tiger Woods is on hand to watch Federer who earlier in the week expressed a keen interest on meeting the world's best golfer.
Woods, who is dressed in white and wearing a baseball cap, sits next to the Federer's girlfriend, Mirka, in the player's box.
"We have been trying to meet and it never worked out," Federer says. "He promised to come if I was in the final so I had some pressure on me. Thanks Tiger."
