France must succeed in next year's World Cup Wednesday, September 6 2006 11:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Paris:
The success of next year's World Cup in France depends on the progress of the host nation in the tournament, according to the organising committee president Bernard Lapasset.
Speaking almost a year to the day before the final is due to be held at the Stade de France, on September 7, 2007, Lapasset says that only a strong showing from the mercurial French team can guarantee a festive atmosphere.
"We could be the best in terms of organisation but we also want joy and emotion from a France team that is seductive, attractive and generous to go along with that."
"We can put the methodology in place but we need the French team to respond to our call."
Lapasset says the committee have put everything in place to help coach Bernard Laporte but he also believes it is vital the team start to turn their home turf into a fortress.
"There is no minimum objective, we are starting with the maximum aims: winning seven matches and demonstrating that we are the masters of our own territory," says Lapasset.
France entertains New Zealand, the early tournament favourites, and Argentina in November internationals.
"There is work to be done. Then, in November, there are matches against the All Blacks and Argentina."
"One year ahead of the World Cup, we have to show that we are dominant at home."
