Ball tampering law should not be done away Thursday, August 31 2006 11:00 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Melbourne:
Top Australian cricketers, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist, do not think that the law governing ball tampering should be done away with as suggested by Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer.
"I don't agree we should scrap the rule," veteran seamer Glenn McGrath tells sources.
Woolmer has questioned the law on ball tampering and says it should be abolished in the wake of the Oval Test forefeiture by Pakistan.
"The umpires out in the middle have to call it as they see it," the fast bowler says adding the ICC should back umpires on such issues.
"They have to be given the confidence to call it as they see it and be backed in their decisions," McGrath says.
Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist also echoes McGrath's opinion on the subject.
"It's a grey area but I think the rules are pretty close to doing an adequate job. At the end of the day, part of the spirit is that the umpire's decision is final and that's the standards we set as a team," Gilchrist says.
