Australia striker Mark Viduka beats Chelsea Thursday, August 24 2006 13:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
London:
Australia striker Mark Viduka's 90th minute winner sees Middlesbrough beat English Premiership champions Chelsea 2-1 at the Riverside on Wednesday (23 Aug, 2006).
Emanuel Pogatetz heads in a Fabio Rochemback free kick with 10 minutes remaining to level the scores after the visitors, in their second league match of the season, has seen £30 million striker Andriy Shevchenko scores his first Premiership goal for the Londoners in the 16th minute.
It gives 'Boro's rookie manager Gareth Southgate a notable scalp especially as he has seen his side surrender a 2-0 lead last Saturday (19 Aug, 2006) and end up losing 3-2 to Reading.
Elsewhere Manchester United makes it two wins from two, and so went top of the table, by defeating Charlton 3-0 at The Valley, with goals coming from Darren Fletcher, Louis Saha - his second in two matches - and veteran striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Fletcher pounces on a slip by Jonathan Fortune and keeps his composure before firing past Scott Carson and finding the roof of the net.
Saha then fires an unstoppable low shot past Carson late on before Solskjaer produces a composed finish from Saha's cross.
"It was a great performance by us with Gary Neville ruled out this morning and others missing, it's a real demonstration of how strong the pool is," says United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"It's a maturing team, the young players like Fletcher and O'Shea are growing up."
And Ferguson is especially pleased Solskjaer has scored his first league goal for three years after career-threatening injuries.
"That was a great moment for all of us, to see a player persevere through a torrid time, he never lost faith and he got his repayment tonight."
With Chelsea losing, United moves two points clear at the top of the table and Ferguson adds, "It's only two games of course but we have the will to win the title, the players to do it and the spirit in the camp - and we have a great chance this year."
Australia's Tim Cahill comes off the bench to grab an equaliser for Everton in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn at Ewood Park.
South African striker Benni McCarthy has opened the scoring early in the second half, his shot creeping in following a run into the area by David Bentley.
Everton has a penalty appeal turned down before Cahill then sweeps home after confusion in the Rovers penalty area.
It is a tale of two penalties as Jimmy Bullard's stoppage-time spot-kick cancelled out El-Hadji Diouf's 73rd minute penalty to ensure a 1-1 draw for Fullham against Bolton at Craven Cottage.
Diouf opens the scoring after Luis Boa Morte bring down Gary Speed but Abdoulaye Faye's handball gives Bullard a chance to level.
Meanwhile Martin O'Neill's first home game as Aston Villa manager ends in victory as his side comes from a goal behind to defeat Premiership newcomers Reading 2-1 at Villa Park.
The visitors take the lead after four minutes when Korean star Seol Ki-Hyeon twists and turns on the right flank before crossing for Kevin Doyle, who headed home from close range.
Villa levelles after 34 minutes through Juan Pablo Angel's penalty after Ibrahima Sonko bring down Luke Moore, with the Royals centre-back receiving a red card for the foul. Gareth Barry nods in the winner from Peter Whittingham's cross.
Manchester City and Portsmouth play out a goalless draw at Eastlands in a match where Pompey midfielder Pedro Mendes is carried off on a stretcher after being sent crashing into the advertising hoardings by Ben Thatcher.
"I knew exactly what was coming five seconds before it happened," says Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp.
"As soon as I saw Ben Thatcher running into the corner, I knew what was coming. I would have bet my life on it."
"Off the field, you could not meet a nicer boy. Unfortunately, on the pitch he is capable of doing things like that. It was an horrendous challenge and totally out of order."
