Dean Wilson triumphs Tom Lehman at PGA playoff Monday, August 14 2006 11:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Castle rock:
Dean Wilson curls in a putt on the second playoff hole to defeat US Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman here Sunday (13 Aug, 2006) and captures the 5.5 million-dollar PGA International.
Lehman and Wilson finish 72 holes at the uniquely scored event with 34 points and each make par at the first playoff hole. Both men are in the fairway on the second playoff hole, the par-4 ninth, but Lehman is only on the edge of the green while Wilson is 10 feet away. Lehman is inches short and taps in for par before Wilson wins it.
Lehman now has a chance to qualify for his own team for next month's Ryder Cup. Ten automatic qualifiers will be set after next week's PGA Championship and Lehman will have two captain's choices.
But Ryder Cup thoughts take a back seat to his bid to win a PGA title.
"You forget about that and deal with what happens later," Lehman says.
The event uses the Modified Stable ford scoring system in which golfers receive eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle, two for a birdie, zero for par, minus-one for a bogey and minus-three for anything worse.
Japan's Daisuke Maruyama and American Steve Flewsch share third on 32 points, one better than American Stewart Cink.
